Some argue that there is no urgency to relax the ban, as Hong Kong does not suffer from food shortages and can easily obtain supplies from other countries.
Since the disaster in Fukushima in 2011, Hong Kong has banned imports of fresh produce and milk from several Japanese prefectures and tested for radiation from fresh produce from the rest of the country. The Hong Kong government is considering revising these bans.
Based on a scientific assessment of food security, the Hong Kong government is proposing an amendment to relax these bans. The ban on products from Fukushima would be maintained but the ban on 4 neighboring prefectures (Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma) would be removed and replaced by radiation tests.
Since 2011, Hong Kong has tested 490,000 Japanese food samples and found low levels of radiation in 46. The most recent contaminated sample was found in September 2016.
