Poland lacks workers for its fruit crops, especially cherries, raspberries and strawberries.
This year the Polish production of summer fruits could decrease considerably. There may be 40% of volumes that will not be harvested due to lack of workers.
The association of Polish producers of Fruits & Vegetables believes that the harvest of summer fruits are threatened. Cherries, raspberries and strawberries may not be harvested in full. For strawberries, up to 40% of production may not be harvested.
Because of the lack of workers from the east, that is from Ukraine. After the introduction in Ukraine of biometric passports, Ukrainian citizens are not allowed to enter Poland to work because according to the Polish Customs Service, only tourists can enter the country using these passports.
Polish professionals have called for a relaxation of these regulations and a simplification of procedures to employ foreigners.
