Portuguese brand is the first one to use the GGN label within the fruit and veg category
Sonae MC is one of the leading companies in Portugal’s food retail sector. With a background of more than 35 years, the brand provides a wide range of high-quality products in Portugal and Spain. Consistently motivated by innovation and guided by a goal to deliver more to its customers, Sonae MC becomes the first brand to use the GGN label within the fruit and veg category.
The GGN label (GLOBALG.A.P Number) confirms that the products have been grown in accordance with certified good agricultural practices which cover food safety, sustainability, social responsibility, animal welfare, environmental protection and transparency of the supply chain.
Launching this autumn in 40 of Sonae MC's local stores, first, the GGN label will focus on grapes from Vale de Rosa. Following a strategic growth plan, the brand will gradually adopt the label for other products in the next months.
In 1998, Sonae MC founded the Continente Producers’ Club (CPC), a support structure that unites Portuguese agriculture and food retail to advertise national products according to high quality and safety standards. Today, CPC has 256 members, and 80% of its fruit and veg producers are certified by GLOBALG.A.P., with the remaining 20 percent obligated to obtain certification within 3 years after becoming a member.
Ondina Afonso, Chair of Continente Producers’ Club, SONAE MC, stated that obtaining a GGN label is a great source of pride in all the hard work that their producers have done. The label represents an important component of SONAE MC’s farm-to-fork strategy and their ongoing commitment to responsible sourcing practices and transparency.
