After the announcement of the 1st harvest estimates made at the beginning of August during Prognosfruit 2022, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) is revising its estimates downwards and is now forecasting 90,000 tonnes less.
According to recent data from WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association), the European apple harvest for the coming season is expected to reach 12,076,000 tons. That is around 90,000 tonnes less than the initial estimate (12,168,000 tonnes) announced in August during Prognosfrut 2022.
Most countries, except Poland and the Czech Republic, revised their initial estimates downwards, notably France, Italy and Spain.
Among the explanations for this decline: the weather conditions in August, with heat waves and droughts in certain regions, which negatively affected the size and color of part of the harvest.
The coming season promises to be complicated. The sector will also have to deal with a shortage of seasonal workers, as well as soaring electricity prices which will drive up the cost of storage facilities.
