China is the main buyer of Vietnamese dragon fruit, but China has closed its land borders to the fruit trade for several weeks. Vietnam is trying to diversify its export destinations
According to the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia, large volumes of dragon fruit are now being exported. In one week, about 30 tonnes of Vietnamese dragon fruit were shipped, with destinations including Western Australia and South Australia.
These volumes should continue to increase according to Vietnamese professionals. Last year, dragon fruit exports to Australia increased by 14% despite the various negative effects of the pandemic.
Traces of Coronavirus were detected in some consignments imported into China a few weeks ago and a temporary ban was imposed on dragon fruit imports from Vietnam. This Chinese zero-covid policy has greatly disrupted the Vietnamese sector as China has been the main buyer of Vietnamese dragon fruit for years.
According to industry analysts, China has increased the area under dragon fruit cultivation over the past three years. China could become self-sufficient within 5 years and therefore stop importing Vietnamese dragon fruit. The search for new markets is becoming imperative for Vietnamese professionals.
