Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the port of Antwerp has remained 100% operational. For the 1st quarter of the year, the port recorded exceptional growth in the reefer segment.
The port of Antwerp experienced a strong increase in the traffic of perishable foodstuffs during the 1st quarter. In total, 252,452 TEU of refrigerated containers were processed, an increase of + 23% compared to the 1st quarter of 2019 (205,157 TEU).
The growth recorded is truly remarkable if we compare it with + 3.8% and + 7.2% recorded respectively in the 1st quarter of 2018 and 2019.
Exceptional volumes are the result of the port's growing role in the reefer segment and the increased demand for food and pharmaceutical products observed during this period.
These results confirm the increasingly important role played by the port of Antwerp on the reefer market. Thanks to its strategic location, the port of Antwerp is increasingly chosen as the leading European port of call. Providing shippers of perishable foodstuffs with short transit times to the main consumer markets in Europe.
