Ukraine won third place in Europe in watermelon production in 2006

According official statistics, Ukraine produced 687.000 tons of watermelon in 2006. Only Russia, about 1 million tons and Spain, about 700.000 tons, produced more fruit.
Experts think that the production datas are ca 15 - 20% underestimated. Considering the last year dry weather in most European countries, the watermelon production in Ukraine is right behind Russia.
Regarding watermelon export from Ukraine temporary estimations are already pointing first place in Europe.
Despite very high offer of watermelon on ukrainian market many producers are planning in 2007 to enlarge the area of fruit planting. The yield is very attractive because of low production costs and no difficulties in cultivation. It would be golden business for Ukraine if they could organize export channels to EU countries.
