According to an FAO report on the world banana market, the Philippines will consolidate its position as the 2nd world banana exporter over the next 9 years thanks to better supply management and strong demand from the main Asian markets. .
This report, issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was prepared in January and does not take into account the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on world banana trade. The report predicts that banana production in the Philippines will continue to increase in the coming years thanks to successful disease management and significant investments in improving yields and expanding the area.
According to the report, demand for Filipino bananas is mainly driven by growing import demand from China, as well as by sustained demand from Japan. Banana consumption per capita in China is expected to increase by 1.1% per year. The Philippines is expected to increase its share in volume of world banana exports from 15.6% in the reference period to 18.6% in 2029, thus consolidating its position as the world's second largest supplier of bananas behind Ecuador.
The FAO has indicated that world banana production will increase by 1.5% per year from this year to reach 132.6 million tonnes in 2029, assuming that climatic conditions are normal and that banana diseases do not spread more.
World banana exports, excluding plantains, reached a record level of 20.2 million tonnes in 2019, thanks to the strong growth in supply from Ecuador and the Philippines, the two main exporters worldwide. Ecuador in 2018 exported 6.26 million tonnes of bananas, the Philippines in 2019 exported 4.4 million tonnes of bananas.
