According to Bio Suisse in 2021 sales of organic products confirmed the strong growth observed in 2020 and increased again by +3.9% to exceed 4 billion CHF (4.2 billion USD).
Bio Suisse presented the figures concerning the development of organic in the country. The strong growth observed in 2020 during the pandemic was confirmed in 2021 with a further increase of +3.9%. Retail trade and direct sales of organic products exceeded CHF 4 billion (USD 4.2 billion) in total sales for the first time.
According to Bio Suisse, the market share of organic products has now reached 10.9%. The organic products most appreciated by Swiss consumers remain eggs (29.2% market share), bread (26.3%) and vegetables (23.8%). For vegetables, the bad weather last summer caused some product shortages which led to a decrease in turnover for this segment.
In the country there are currently 7,473 farms that work according to the Bio Suisse specifications and cultivate 177,060 hectares. Due to the high demand, producers who wish to switch to organic farming are highly sought after. Nationally, approximately 16.8% of farms are certified 'Bourgeon Bio Suisse'.
