In recent years, Chile has increased plantings but nearly 40% of these trees are not yet in full production. Chilean production and exports will continue to rise.
A report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture of Chile, predict an increase for the season 2012/2013.
Chilean exports of cherries should increase by 32% to 75,774 tons this season.
Chile accounts for 2% of global production of cherries. 3 varieties (Bing, Sweet Heart, Santina) represent 88% of total exports. Other varieties (Van, Stella, Summit) topped new plantings.
