Last pineapple cannery in Hawaii Islands
United States
Thursday 10 May 2007
Hawaii will see its last pineapple cannery close June 30th when Maui Land and Pineapple Company stops canning operations in Kahului.
The company says it will continue to sell fresh fruit and to process pineapple juice.
David Cole is the chairman, president and chief executive of Maui Land and Pine.
He says the move is necessary as the company works to develop a profitable business model.
The end of canning will eliminate 120 jobs, or 27 percent of Maui Land and Pine's work force. But some of the affected workers may be transferred to its fresh fruit packing and juice processing operations.
With higher labor and land costs, island pineapple growers have lost market share to foreign growers and processors in Ecuador, Mexico and Costa Rica.
