Veto on imports from Turkey
This prohibition was introduced because the Russian minimum residue level requirements (MRL) were not being fulfilled.
The measure has created panic amongst Turkish farmers, who will have to face up the losses caused by the stoppage and the collapse of prices. Due to this decision, actually the current prices for vegetables began to fall drastically in Turkey. In some places, producers were forced to destroy tomatoes, and no-one discards that prices will continue to fall.
On 1st June it came into effect a memorandum for fruit and vegetables exports from EU to Russia signed in March, establishing - among other requirements - that in case Russian Authorities detect certain groups of products from a certain country that repeatedly breach the Russian regulation, they will demand each consignment to be accompanied by a “security” certificate, verifying compliance with their maximum residue limits allowed as well as a report which informs on the products used during the production, handling and process, dated with the last treatment effected.
The Russian federation will first apply the maximum residue limits established in their legislation for that particular product, or the most similar of the group according to the Codex Alimentarius’ definition, because has not admitted the maximum residue limits established by the EU.
