Spanish demand for kiwifruit growing
Spain

The high price of kiwifruit is not stopping consumer demand in Spain.
Kiwifruit sales are continuing to grow in Spain despite the fairly high prices demanded of the fruit. This is the verdict of Ramón Rey, marketing director of Eurobanan, who sources the fruit on a year-round basis.
The local distributor is expecting to market between 25,000-30,000 tons of kiwifruit from the French supplier Sikig in 2007/08, a 10-15 per cent rise in volumes procured from the company last season, as well as developing sales of its Sikig organic kiwifruit.
Mr Rey told Eurofruit Magazine: "Consumption of kiwifruit continues to grow steadily at the moment. Although prices are quite high, consumers, and especially adults, have remained loyal to the fruit because of its reliable quality."
Eurobanan is looking to capitalise on the fruit's popularity this season via a special wholesale and retail campaign in Spanish cities, where the majority of Sikig branded fruit is consumed.
"Starting in November, promotions will tour Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Alicante and Seville in an effort to stimulate sales and awareness of Sikig-branded kiwifruit during Sikig's main marketing window," Mr Rey Adds.
