Chinese authorities plan to make Hainan a major supplier of coconut products by 2025, according to the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) on Economic Sector Development, released by the provincial forestry department.
According to the plan, Hainan will be home to a cluster of industrial companies specializing in coconut processing. With the objective of creating, for products made from coconut from Hainan, brands of international scope. The areas dedicated to coconuts on the island will be increased, as demand remains high in the Chinese market which buys around 2.5 billion coconuts per year from Southeast Asian countries.
By 2025 the local coconut industry is expected to have an annual product of over 23 billion CNY (3.6 billion USD), the plan predicts.
In China, the island of Hainan (35,354 km2 and 290 km long and 180 km wide) is the main producer, since it represents up to 99% of the area dedicated to this crop throughout the country. According to official statistics, farmers on the island harvest around 230 million coconuts per year. The other cultivation areas in the country are the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan, and Guangxi Zhuang.
