Auchan acquired Eastern Europe's Real hypermarkets as it tries to compensate for the crisis in Western Europe.
Auchan has bought the Real supermarket chain from German group Metro.
Auchan paid Metro €1.1 billion and the operation consists of 91 supermarkets and hypermarkets in Poland, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, and 13 shopping centers (6 in Romania and 7 in Russia). A total of 720,000 m2.
The French group believes that Real complements its business and bring its number of its hypermarkets to 749: 266 in Western Europe
, 209 in Central Europe and 274 in Asia.
This expansion to the east, where activities are less affected by the crisis, should compensate the weak outlook for Western Europe. For its part, Metro, which keeps Real Turkey expressed the desire to focus on the German market and Cash & Carry.
