Worldwide, demand for avocados continues to outstrip supply. The United States imports from Mexico, while Europe imports from Kenya, South Africa, Israel, Peru and Chile.
According to local media reports, SAAGA (South African Avocado Growers' Association) has declared that it has begun the registrations and inspections required to enter the Japanese market. Exports to Japan could begin as early as June.
In 2022, Japan imported around 50,000 tonnes of avocados. The Japanese market represents an opportunity for the South African avocado, which plans to increase its shipments to other Asian markets.
