Corbana has reported a year-on-year increase in Costa Rica's European banana export figures of 2.4 per cent for 2007.
Costa Rica enjoyed a successful 2007 for banana exports, it has been revealed this week, with global exports totalling 113.5m boxes, up by 5.1 per cent, and European Union sales increasing by 2.4 per cent when compared with 2006.
A report by Costa Rican banana producers' association COBANA showed that sales in some of the country's key European markets, such as Belgium (82 per cent) and Germany (24 per cent) had grown significantly.
Elsewhere, Italy imported a total of 10 per cent more banana boxes during 2007, while exports of the fruit to the UK increased by 7.2 per cent.
Jorge Sauma Aguilar, chief executive officer of Corbana, said: Costa Rica has sustained its growth again in 2007, allowing us to hit new industry records in both export volumes and revenues.
"Europe remains a key market for Costa Rican bananas, invigorated by the consolidation of our market share in our core markets, especially Belgium. Last year's performance demonstrates that the recovery initiated in 2006 has been based on solid ground and is in line with our global growth strategy," he added.
He also said that 2008 will see a focus on consolidating the country's research and development position in order to maintain growth.
