At stake, the effects of climate change, energy costs, the weakness of the Canadian Dollar and the presidency of Donald Trump.
Canada's Food Price Report, a study published by researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax, estimates that increases in the food sector in 2017 will be higher than usual (1-2%). Various factors (climatic conditions, cost of energy, weakness of the Canadian Dollar) are likely to worsen this year, leading to a rise in food prices between 4 and 6%.
Perhaps more, because of another element: the presidency of Donald Trump. Indeed, the report suggests that if the US administration succeeded in repelling all illegal workers, the US agriculture sector would be short of 2 million workers. The impact on harvested volumes and yields would be significant and could result in an increase in all agricultural products that Canada imports massively.
