MD
Container traffic in the port of Barcelona grew by 18% during the first half of 2011.
Growth is continuing with more than 1 million TEUs (20-foot containers) between January and June 2011, an increase of 18% over the same period in 2010.
The main connection the Port of Barcelona has is with the Far East, North Africa and the Middle East. The volume of traffic with Algeria was up 49%, 44% with Turkey, 28% with the U.S. and 18% for Mexico.
The Port of Barcelona wants to increase its efficiency and double its current capacity (2.5 to 5 million TEUs). To achieve this, a Quality Plan has been established, receiving support from operators.
