According to the State Statistics Committee, in the period from January to October 2022 Uzbekistan imported 112,300 tons of bananas.
This represents almost twice the volume imported (58,600 tonnes) over the period from January to October 2021 and a multiplication by 4.4 of the volume imported (25,500 tonnes) over the period from January to October 2020.
Over the period from January to October 2022, the main supplier of bananas remains Ecuador with 111,400 tonnes, far ahead of Kazakhstan (426 tonnes), Turkey (197 tonnes), India (144 tonnes) and Kyrgyzstan ( 99 tons).
This huge increase in banana consumption in Uzbekistan can be explained, according to sector analysts, by the enthusiasm of consumers for this fruit during and after the health crisis, but also by the abolition of customs duties since the end of 2021. The government has removed customs duties (10% to 20%) on various fruits, including citrus fruits, kiwis, apples, pears and bananas
