Organic products´ sales registered a positive trend in Spain too (between +15 and 20%) and forecasts keep being favorable, in spite of the crisis.
"In 5 years the turnover in this sector has doubled and now it is worth 600 million euro per year," declared Víctor Gonzálvez, technical responsible of the Organic Farming Spanish Association, news reported by Ecoalimenta.
The news can be judged very positively if considering the price differential with conventional products (between 20 and 30%). However, although all main players think that the sector has not been affected by the crisis, the development of the Spanish market in this field is still a challenge for the future. Currently the consumption of organic products in Spain concerns only 1% of total food consumption. Nevertheless organic farming surfaces exceed one million hectares and in the territory there are approximately 20.100 operators, according to recent estimates released by the ministry. These data confirm that the Country is most oriented towards the export: Spain is the second biggest producer of organic foodstuffs in Europe.
A growing number of organic products are present on the shelves of Spanish large retailers. In 2008, compared to the previous year, sales of organic certified products increased by 22% in Alcampo group´s supermarkets, while the turnover has risen by 21.5%. By now there are already 600 organic items produced with the company brand (that was born 10 years ago). Moreover, the Spanish retailer has recently introduced also a line of eco-sustainanble cleansing products.
