China stops U.S. imports of Red and Golden Delicious.
China has suspended imports of U.S. Red and Golden Delicious apples.
China has stopped issuing import permits from August 9 in what it says is the fight against smuggling from Hong Kong - U.S. apples transit through Hong Kong to enter China.
The situation regarding the suspended imports will be discussed at the next China-USA
summit held at the end of the month in Napa, California.
China had accepted the importation of Apples Red and Golden Delicious from U.S. since the mid-1990s. The country has become the second largest customer for Washington state, behind India. It imported 408,000 boxes of apples in 2011 and Hong Kong imported 2.1 million boxes.
