It has been a long road for avocados in California who began the process of accessing the Chinese market in 2005. Approval came in 2020 and the very first shipment of avocados from California to China has just been completed.
Mission Produce, Inc., the global player in the sourcing, production and distribution of fresh Hass avocados, has announced with its partner Mr. Avocado, which is one of the leading avocado brands in China, the very first shipment of avocados, from California, to China.
“Mission was the 1st to send avocados to China from Peru, Chile and Colombia, and now we are the 1st to do so from California,” said Steve Barnard, Managing Director and Founder of Mission Produce.
The transit time between California and China takes approximately 14-16 days by ship and 1 day by air.
California avocados will be available at Ole, Rainbow Supermarket, Aldi China, JD.com, Seven Fresh, and Pagoda stores across China. The fruits will also be distributed to Chinese wholesale markets through the Jiangnan Fruit Market in Guangzhou and the Huizhan Fruit Market in Shanghai.
CAC (California Avocado Commission) mentioned, for the first time in 2005, the idea of introducing its avocados to China. The negotiations resulted in the signing of various protocols in 2020, including a list, approved by the Chinese authorities, of Californian shippers. Access to the Chinese market is expected to be worth around $ 10 million per year for Californian producers, according to USDA estimates.
