Chiquita leaving Genoa for Vado terminal?
Italy

In the last weeks a vessel of the multinational company Chiquita deserted Genoa Fruit Terminal - managed by Clerici - making route to Vado Ligure, the Italian specialized magazine L'Avvisatore Marittimo reports . The “Chiquita Rostok” therefore unloaded 4,000 tons of bananas at the Reefer Terminal managed by the Orsero’s. For the time being it seems this has been only an extraordinary event, occurred on November 5; however that was enough to make rumours circulate about a possible divorce between Clerici and Chiquita for a new agreement with Vado reefer. No official confirmation so far has come from the operators, however Mr Alfonso Clerici do not want to minimize. “We will soon hold a press conference. We certainly go ahead and don’t give up”, he explained to L'Avvisatore Marittimo. The managing director of Vado reefer terminal Alessandro Piccardo didn’t confirm by now that Chiquita is permanently moving to Vado: “It was only a single event, though I would certainly be very pleased if Chiquita would come to us, as for any other client. It’s too soon to talk about that”. Chiquita’s contract with Genoa will expire by the end of this year. Many seem to be sure that it won’t be renewed. This would be a further blow for Genoa after Costa Container Line leaving this port to Vado. At present another multinational wharfs at Vado: Del Monte, which holds a 30% share of the Italian banana market (Chiquita holds 50%). Vado terminal has however showed that it could easily host these new traffics.
