In a country where obesity represent 33.8% of the population, an incredible decision just taken.
The U.S. Congress has classified pizza as a vegetable, a healthy food that can continue to be served in school canteens in the country.
The decision appears to be the result of political maneuvering and strong lobbying. Proposals for better nutrition for children were sponsored by Michelle Obama and the project My Plate was designed to serve healthy lunches
in schools, increasing amounts of fruits and vegetables and reducing sugar and fat.
Arguing that the federal government can not tell kids what to eat, Obama's political opponents have thwarted the project. They insisted that the tomato paste used to make pizza is counted as a vegetable. This view was supported by companies that produce frozen pizza for schools, the food industry and farmers
