All the Peruvian asparagus industry must join forces to face the new challenges of the global market.

To maintain its position as the first exporter in the world, the asparagus industry of Peru needs to reformulate its strategy.

A recent study by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) advocates a change in strategy for the Peruvian industry if it wants to stay ahead of its competitors.

The report points the global market dynamics, competition with Mexico, increased logistics costs, changes in exchange rates, the lack of cohesion among exporters. So many factors, which added to the consequences of climate change (water shortages in the main producing areas) conjugate to limit future growth.

The report emphasizes that the whole sector must work together, public and private, producers' organizations and research institutes to develop innovative techniques to improve production and to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Recalling that Peru was the world's largest exporter of fresh asparagus between 2008 and 2012; but Mexico gains in power and already supplies to many key markets such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain.
