First GMO Test
Uganda
Tuesday 08 April 2008
Uganda is testing for the first time a genetically modified crop.
This experience is intended to help banana crops resist the Black Sigatoka, a disease caused by fungus.
The research on this new banana is led by the Kawanda Research Institute and will last for 10 to 15 years.
If the new banana is approved by the scientists, the government will have to implement a policy on bio-safety.
