In Honduras, banana exports in the first six months of 2022 totaled $293.4 million, an increase of $158.4 million compared to what was exported during the same period of 2021, according to the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH).
The increase is mainly linked to higher volumes shipped, 6.174.500 40-pound boxes (18.1 kilos) valued at $113.2 million, as a result of the recovery of production in cultivated areas that were affected by storms Eta and Iota in 2020.
However, international banana sales in the first half of 2022 did not exceed those recorded in the same period of 2020 before the aforementioned climatic phenomena ($294.7 million).
The price per box of bananas in the first half of 2022 was $21.67, while in the same period of 2021 it was $18.33 and $19.27 in 2020.
The improvement in prices this year is due to a reduction in production in Ecuador - the main banana producing country in the world - due to unfavorable weather conditions.
