Maersk to open first reefer plant in South America
MD
Maersk Container Industry Society (MCI) will set up South America’s first reefers manufacturing (refrigerated containers) plant.
The plant will be located in San Antonio and is expected to cost $170 million. Production should begin late 2013 and will lead to 40,000 containers per year. MCI has a current production of 41,000 reefers, 37,000 container machinery and 200,000 conventional containers.
It's an investment for the future, commented MCI emphasising the importance of the South American market in the world trade of fresh produce. The volume of goods transported in refrigerated containers is steadily increasing ( up 10% per year) and is close to 55 million tons.
