International grape shipments in the Atacama region are finalised

The port of Caldera, in the Atacama region (Chile), has completed the shipments of table grapes for this season, reaching a total of more than 2 million 330 thousand boxes of fruit from the Copiapó and Huasco valleys, with the main destination: the United States (photo: uvanova.cl).

The total of 9 ships arrived at the regional port, with 2 of them arriving in December, 5 in January and the remaining in the first weeks of February, according to the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG). In addition to table grapes, blueberries and nectarines were also exported from the port of Caldera.
Up to 26 February, total exports of table grapes from Atacama reached 7 million 608 thousand boxes of fruit, in a season that came early and ended earlier than usual. In the previous season, up to the same date, the region had exported 8 million 167 thousand boxes.
After the United States, table grape exports from the region reach countries in the Far East, Latin America, Europe, Canada and the Middle East.
Mei Maggi Achu, regional director of SAG, toured several export plants in the Copiapó and Huasco valleys, verifying the upcoming closure of the harvests and the phytosanitary certification of the fruit to meet the requirements of the destination countries.
