Organic blueberries holds its pristine with RipeLocker
RipeLocker, one of the leaders in extending the post-harvest life of perishables, announced its RipeLocker containers held freshly harvested organic blueberries in pristine condition for two months.
In a recent trial, six RipeLocker containers were used to store freshly harvested organic blueberries from Blueberry Hill for eight weeks. Based on good results, Blueberry Hill, the U.S. organic farm that grows fruit, vegetables and microgreens, plans to lease these commercial containers to extend its normal selling season for blueberries, increase margins and provide higher quality for longer periods to its customers. As a result, retailers and consumers alike are getting better quality berries with a longer shelf life.
The patented RipeLocker containers have low-atmosphere, extending the post-harvest life of fresh produce by weeks, often months. These containers have pallet-size, made from recycled materials and are reusable. This summer, they will be already available for lease to customers on an annual basis.
Jeff Weijohn, owner of Blueberry Hill, shared they were pleased with the quality of the blueberries that had been stored in the RipeLocker containers for eight weeks. "They looked like they came right out of the field. After seeing such great results, we quickly signed up to lease the containers as we anticipate a strong ROI from using them,” he added.
As a technology, RipeLocker containers are a system for managing atmospheric pressure, humidity and gas composition (oxygen and CO2) within containers. They suppress the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, resulting in significantly less decay. Based on the specific needs of each fresh product, RipeLocker tailors operating parameters such as internal pressure, oxygen and CO2 levels to optimize shelf life and freshness. The system reacts to changes in the storage or shipping environment by automatically making precise adjustments to prevent damage and reduce decay.
Based in Seattle, WA, USA, RipeLocker is one of the leaders in extending the post-harvest life of perishables. Through the use of RipeLocker containers, consumers benefit from better taste and shelf life, and retailers experience less waste at their stores. Founded in 2016, a science-based and data-driven company, has been testing the efficacy of its containers for several years with many of the world's largest growers.
