The Onion sector is facing an unprecedented situation in terms of late sowing.
With the cold spell that hit the UK in early March and then a prolonged period of low temperatures and rain for the rest of March and early April, some growers are now facing a difficult situation to get a harvest this year.
British Onions, the organization of the sector, believes that the current situation is unprecedented in terms of late sowing. Good weather is essential in the coming months to compensate for the late planting of this year's crop.
Generally sowing and planting are done in mid-March, some crops can be sown 6 weeks later. This raises concerns about the potential of the harvest. There are also concerns about the plantations already made because they will have stayed in wet and cold soils for weeks.
But British onion growers are doing everything they can to get good crops to meet the needs of their customers.
