Apeel's plant-based technology spearheads food waste reduction
VU | Apeel Sciences
As Earth Month is celebrated, Apeel Sciences, one of the pioneering companies in fresh produce supply chain innovation, takes pride in unveiling its environmental accomplishments for the year 2023. Apeel has made significant strides in reducing food waste and its environmental repercussions through its plant-based technology, which forms a natural protective layer around produce. This innovation serves as a crucial tool in the global battle against climate change, ensuring that fresh produce remains accessible to a broader population.
Key Achievements in 2023:
-Prevented Over 60 Million Pieces of Fruit From Being Wasted: Apeel's technology extends the freshness of fruit, allowing it more time to be enjoyed by consumers.
-Substantially Decreased Greenhouse Gas Emissions: By mitigating food waste, Apeel prevented over 9,000,000 kg of CO2-equivalents from being emitted into the atmosphere, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of planting 151,600 trees.
-Conserved Water Resources: Apeel's technology saved 2.7 billion liters of water, akin to the volume of 1,100 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Luiz Beling, CEO of Apeel Sciences, emphasized, that food waste and its detrimental effects on the climate are pressing global issues that require immediate attention. Apeel's accomplishments in the past year demonstrate that innovative technologies like its plant-based coating, which prolongs produce freshness, offer tangible benefits to the planet. By ensuring more food nourishes communities and less ends up in landfills, Apeel is contributing to a healthier world.
Approximately one-third of the world's food is lost or wasted annually throughout the supply chain, in stores, or at homes, amounting to over a billion tons. This inefficiency not only represents a significant economic loss but also a missed opportunity to combat hunger, conserve resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to the UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024, food waste contributes to 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the urgent need for solutions like Apeel's.
Apeel also assists its partners in achieving their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. By offering fresher produce that minimizes food waste, companies can reduce their environmental footprint, enhance food security, and support sustainable agricultural practices.
Apeel's technology's positive impact is calculated through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies, with food waste data being a key input. The impact on retail food waste is determined through controlled, in-store pilot tests. Apeel has also measured in-home waste impact in certain produce types and end markets. While Apeel expects reductions in consumer waste, its LCA methods include changes in consumer waste only when measured using primary data.
About Apeel:
Apeel is dedicated to creating a healthier and more sustainable global food system by harnessing the power of materials and data sciences. Apeel's plant-based protection prolongs the freshness of produce by utilizing materials inherent in all fruits and vegetables. This protective "peel" slows down water loss and oxidation, preserving produce freshness from farm to kitchen. Apeel's technology is available for various categories and markets, including organic and conventionally grown produce.
