Fewer imports from China, the price soars for ginger in Bangladesh.
After onion and garlic, ginger registers a sharp rise in its price due to a shortage of supply.
In Bangladesh, the price of ginger in the country's capital almost doubled in one week, from 170 to 320 BDT (from 2 to 3.76 USD). According to professionals, this increase is due to the supply crisis.
Bangladesh imports huge quantities of garlic and ginger mainly from China. But the COVID-19 crisis affected exports from China and imports to Bangladesh. There are said to be many stocks in the ports which could not be unloaded due to lack of manpower.
The government has formed a special committee to keep the prices of basic necessities at a stable level.
