The average consumption of fruit and vegetables in the European Union increased slightly in 2021. But this positive trend, started with the pandemic, is precarious due to the economic crisis.
Freshfel Europe has announced the latest edition of the 'Consumption Monitor' which reveals that the average consumption of fruit and vegetables in the EU increased to 364.58 g/day/capita in 2021. That's +2.19% compared to 2020 and +1.27% compared to the average of the previous 5 years.
This remains, however, almost 10% below the minimum of 400 g/day/inhabitant recommended by the WHO.
In 2021, the EU-27 fresh produce market reached 74,354,475 tonnes. This positive trend, which began with the pandemic, is precarious due to the economic crisis which is impacting the purchasing power of European consumers and leading to a reduction in spending.
For 2022 and the start of 2023, estimates show that the positive trend has stalled, with consumption decreasing by around -10%.
The Freshfel Europe Consumption Monitor provides a comparison of consumption trends in the EU-27 as a whole and in each state based on official statistics from EUROSTAT and FAOSTAT. The report is available to Freshfel members but can be purchased by non-members.
