Encouraging results for the 2016 crop year in Senegal. From ministerial sources, agricultural production increased by 8% and exports of horticultural products by 5% compared to the previous season.
The Ministry of Agriculture announced a total agricultural production increase of 8% compared to the previous year. Rice production increased by 5%, horticultural production increased by 6% to 1.206 million tonnes. Exports of horticultural products reached 91 000 tonnes, ie + 5% compared with the previous marketing year
These good results seem to stem from the PRACAS (Program for accelerating the pace of Senegalese agriculture) set up a few years ago. The objectives of this program were to achieve self-sufficiency in rice, onions with a production of 350 000 tons, to develop off-season Fruits & Vegetables with a volume of 157 000 tons. On the basis of what has already been achieved, all the objectives will be achieved.
