The volume of world exports in 2020 varied by -0.81%, putting an end to the rapid increase observed between 2015 and 2019.
The banana is in terms of volume the first fruit marketed in the world but the total volume varied by -0.81% in 2020. While Central and South America recorded an increase in their exports,Asia and Africa recorded a decline.
According to the Banana Statistical Compendium 2020 published by the FAO, world banana exports in 2020 reached 21.542 million tonnes, a variation of -0.81% compared to 2019.
This small variation puts an end to the rapid increase in the volume of world exports observed between 2015 (16.683 million tonnes) and 2019 (21.718 million tonnes).
According to this report, Asia exported 4.4 million tons of bananas, or -11.65% compared to 2019 and Africa exported 631,000 tons of bananas, or -21.8% compared to 2019 .
This negative result for Africa can be explained by the underperformance of Ivory Coast (328,000 tonnes, or -24.2% compared to 2019) and Cameroon (181,000 tonnes, or -11.2% compared to 2019)
The report states that the world's top banana exporters in 2020 were Ecuador (7.03 million tonnes), the Philippines (3.8 million tonnes), Guatemala (2.4 million tonnes), Costa Rica. (2.3 million tonnes), Colombia (2.03 million tonnes).
In 2020 the main importers of bananas were the EU (5.15 million tonnes), the USA (4.09 million tonnes) China (1.81 million tonnes) Russia (1.51 million tonnes) , Japan (1.06 million tonnes).
