According to ONAGRI (Tunisian Observatory of Agriculture) citrus production for this 2022/23 campaign should register -16% in volume compared to the previous campaign and reach 290,000 tonnes.
This decrease concerns all types of citrus fruits: the production of Maltese oranges should register -23.5% to reach 71,000 tonnes, clementines (-15%), mandarins (-18%), Thomson oranges (-7 .1%) and lemon (-23.5%).
Various factors are behind this drop, including unfavorable climatic conditions during the flowering and fruit-setting periods for citrus fruits, high temperatures observed in May and June. But also the decrease in areas (-2.6%) due to the increase in the uprooting rate of aging trees in recent years as well as the lack of water in the production regions.
This decrease concerns most production sites, including the governorate of Nabeul which concentrates 70% of national citrus production, with 77% of Maltese oranges, 73% of clementines and 70% of Thomson oranges.
