In Denmark, the Coop supermarket chain has recalled two lots of avocados due to a high level of cadmium found in them. The recalled product, a two-pack of avocados branded "Smag forskellen avocado 2 stk", is no longer available in any Coop stores, the company said.
According to Coop's quality control manager Malene Teller Blume, the contamination likely occurred during production, but they have not yet received an analysis confirming the exact cause.
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency warns that cadmium is toxic to the kidneys, carcinogenic and harmful to the environment. Although the affected product does not have a specific best-before date, it can be identified by lot numbers 25G and 26B, according to Coop. The containers are clearly marked with this information.
The recall applies to two deliveries made over three days in mid-June. Products delivered after that period are fine and have no problems. According to the quality control manager, this is not a frequent occurrence. Coop recommends returning the product to the store where it was purchased or, if not, discarding it. In addition, they expect similar recalls to be carried out in other countries, as this is a large batch, according to Blume.
