With over 500 stores in Poland, Lidl is expanding into Eastern Europe and plans to enter Lithuania.
Looking still further east for expansion, German chain Lidl is planning to enter Lithuania.
According to business newspaper Verslo žinios, Lidl plans to open stores in every town of over 20,000 inhabitants. The small towns are less interesting because declining population and purchasing power remains low.
Lidl had planned to enter Lithuania in 2002 by buying several parcels for the construction of its stores. This first project was abandoned in 2008 and the land sold. Lidl will now resume the project and start to buy plots. The purchase and construction of stores and logistic centres should take a few months.
