From the beginning until week 15 of the current ginger export season in Peru, the country has managed to export 9,090 tons, reaching a value of US$20,017,128.
According to local media, these figures represent a 62% decrease compared to the same period last year.
In January 2024, 3,274 tons were shipped, marking a 41% reduction compared to January 2023. In February, 3,215 tons were recorded, down 51%; in March, the figure was 1,759 tons, down 79%; and to date in April, 841 tons have been exported, down 76% from last year.
So far, 396 containers have been used for exports, of which 96% were shipped by sea and 4% by air.
In terms of market distribution, 69% of exported ginger went to North America, generating revenues of US$14,168,905. Europe ranked second with 30%, equivalent to US$5,711,631. The Latin American, African, Middle Eastern and Asian markets followed with shares of 0.3% (US$74,000), US$38,246, US$18,000 and US$6,346, respectively.
It is important to note that 84% of the ginger exported was organic, while 16% was conventional.
