Green shoots of growth in Polska
Poland

A new logistics facility is a sign of Polish fresh produce marketer Green Polska's ambition for the future, says its commercial director Grzegorz Rozanski.
The unexpectly cold weather that has jeopardised much of this years Polish apple harvest did bring with it one major, and rather less well reported benefit. Despite being deadly for apples, the freezing conditions were ideal for Polands second main fresh produce export, vegetables, with producers expecting a bumper harvest.
Grzegorz Rozanski, commercial director of leading Polish fresh vegetable marketer Green Polska, reveals that the weather has been a blessing rather than a curse for the country vegetable producers.
"There was a problem with the frosts at the beginning of spring, especially with plums, and there is a prediction that the harvest of apples will be 30-40 per cent lower. But the frost didn't have any effect whatsoever on the vegetables, in fact we are expecting some overproduction in the vegetable sector, definitely this will be the case with greenhouse tomatoes," he explains.
According to Mr Roznaski, there is likely to be a 30 per cent increase in Polands vegetable harvest this year, with most of the rises taking place in root vegetable and potato volumes.
The history of Polands fresh produce sector is surprisingly short and it may come as something of a surprise to learn that Green Polska is one of the country longest running companies, given that it has only been in existence since 1992.
Established over a decade ago by Italian exporter Cooperativa as an importer of Italian fruit and vegetables, Green Polska has developed in recent years into both an importer of Italian grapes and stonefruit, and, increasingly, an exporter of Polish fresh vegetables.
