Lower supplies lift Colombian mango and cantaloupe prices

Wholesale prices for several fresh fruits rose in Colombia in July, according to DANE’s Agricultural Price and Supply Information System, SIPSA.

The increases covered Tommy mangoes, cantaloupes, domestic Red Globe grapes, Gold pineapples, locally grown pears, common limes and granadillas.

Mango prices rose as harvest cycles came to an end in Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Tolima and Magdalena. With fewer mangoes arriving from these production areas, available volumes declined across wholesale markets.

Cantaloupe prices also increased, but for a different reason. Traders reported lower supply from Valle del Cauca, Meta, Huila, Cauca and Santander.

The movement formed part of a wider rise in Colombian food prices, with higher quotations also reported for vegetables, roots, tubers and plantains.
