Onubafruit, the only Spanish representative of the IBO (International Blueberry Organization) has signed an agreement to normalize the production of blueberries in the province of Huelva.
Onubafruit signed an agreement with the company Rústicas del Guadalquivir and the University of Florida. With this agreement, farmers who are members of Onubafruit 5 cooperatives (Cobella, Cartayfres, Costa de Huelva, Freslucena, Condado Cobella SAT), access to the use of better varieties. Onubafruit will launch also launch an action plan to promote this fruit on the domestic market where it is less known .
Rústicas del Guadalquivir is a company that has been developing over 40 new varieties of fruits in close collaboration with the University of Florida. Recent genetic innovations will strengthen the enormous potential of the province in berry production.
In the province of Huelva, the production of blueberries has increased sharply in recent years. Onubafruit recorded 100% growth passing from 2000 tons in 2012 to more than 4000 tons last season, which represents nearly 50% of total production in the province.
