The Chinese market is considered by Uzbekistan for its fruit exports as a good alternative to the Russian market. But the combination of unfavorable conditions led to a severe decline in exports from Uzbekistan to China.
According to recent analysis, fruit exports from Uzbekistan to China in the first 7 months of 2020 decreased by 44% to reach $19 million.
Exports of fresh cherries fell the most sharply. In question, the fall in the production of cherries in 2020 due to the spring frosts. Added to this were fruit quality issues and logistics issues, due to strict quarantine measures to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
Besides Uzbekistan, fresh cherries from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have also gained access to Chinese markets. For comparison, during the same period Chile supplied China with 165,000 tonnes of fresh cherries.
