For years, beer has been the main agri-food export product from Mexico to the US, but in the first two months of 2022, berries such as blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries displaced the beverage.
They were also above shipments of avocado and tequila, products that were also the main agri-food exports in 2021.
According to the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group (GCMA), exports of fresh and frozen berries in that period totaled $930 million, a figure 40% higher than what was exported in the first two months of the previous year.
While in January and February 2022, beer exports accumulated $795 million, the lowest value seen in the supply of this product in the same period.
In the case of Mexican avocado exports, in the first two months of 2022, they totaled $643 million, (+37% year-on-year), but that figure was also below berry shipments.
Tequila was the fourth largest export product in the analyzed period of the current year, followed by meat and tomato.
