SARPA, an affiliate of the state-owned Agrolog group, has been commissioned to issue an international call for tenders to import the 10,000 tonnes of bananas needed to supply the national market (Photo: immiglink.com).
Banana prices have been soaring in Algeria for several months. A number of factors have been identified as contributing to this surge in prices (restrictions on imported volumes, increased demand during the Ramadam period, speculation), but prices have continued to rise for Algerian consumers.
The local media reported the measure as 'unprecedented'. The government will entrust a partner with the responsibility of importing large quantities of bananas in order to guarantee adequate supplies and maintain stable prices.
SARPA (Société Algérienne de Régulation des Produits Agricoles), an affiliate of the state-owned Agrolog group, has been asked to issue an international invitation to tender to import 10,000 tonnes of bananas for the national market. SARPA will then resell these imported bananas to retailers.
