The current 2023/2024 red fruit campaign in Huelva has some 11,243 hectares planted, representing a decrease of 4.75% compared to the 11,802 hectares of the previous year, according to Freshuelva, the Association of Producers and Exporters of Strawberry and Red Fruits of Huelva. This association, which represents 95% of the provincial production, confirms Huelva as a leader in the production and export of berries in Spain.
The strawberry area covers 6,100 hectares (-3.1% compared to the previous season). Factors such as the high temperatures at the beginning of the planting phase and the Bernard storm, which affected the province halfway through the work, caused significant delays, with replanting being completed almost at the end of November. However, subsequent rains contributed to the correct development of the crop.
The area planted with blueberries remained practically unchanged (+0.5%), totaling 3,610 hectares. The diversity of varieties allows production in December, taking advantage of the Christmas holidays and gaining ground against South American productions. Despite strong competition from third countries, the blueberry is consolidated as the second berry in Huelva, after the strawberry, facing greater challenges during the spring months.
The area dedicated to blackberry has increased by 7.5%, with a total of 153 hectares planted. The incorporation of new varieties allows year-round production, with qualities increasingly appreciated by consumers.
Raspberry shows a decrease of 21.5%, with 1,380 hectares in production. This area is not in simultaneous production, since varietal diversity allows harvesting in two seasons, one in autumn and the other in spring.
