After the issues encountered since the beginning of the season especially with Turkish lemons regarding pesticide levels, the European Union has decided to increase the phytosanitary controls at its borders. In this context, not 10% but 20% of the quantities imported will be controlled from the 1st of January 2017. The products concerned are lemons and grenades from third world countries.
For hazelnuts, control will also be increased and aflatoxin will be sought on 5 per cent of hazelnuts and hazelnut products of Turkish origin.
Only good news for Turkish exporters: Aflatoxin control of dried figs and products containing figs of Turkish origin will cover 10 per cent of imported batches, in comparaison to 20 per cent previously.
