Spain´s citrus season: good in prices, bad crop

“As for the past campaigns, the current citrus season is not a satisfactory one due to the production decrease”. This is the opinion of the general secretary Josep Botella of the Spanish agrarian organization La Unió-COAG.
Botella highlights that for the 2007/08 campaign, “despite prices have improved compared to previous years, the production drop is a relevant problem”, which doesn’t allow farmers to benefit from their work and confirms the crisis characterizing the four past seasons. Actually, despite the whole production has been sold on fields, farmers will again record losses due to the smaller crop.
Botella points out that the new Varietal Plan “could very much assist farmers”. However, he explains that this is not a short-term solution: “the new varieties won’t be available before two years”.
